In the dangerous wastelands of Crackland, Abett and Philip are rescued from ruthless goons by Lucy, a fierce warrior. Hating “other siders,” Lucy robs them instead of freeing them, taking Abett’s magical umbrella, Poros, and Philip’s magnetic grapple. Philip manages to untie them, but he’s desperate to escape back to his kingdom, leaving Ābett behind to explore more. As they separate, fate brings them back together when a deadly petrifier attacks. Paralyzed by its gaze, Abett and Lucy are helpless until Philip, overcoming his fears, bravely tries to save them. After the battle, they team up with Lucy, who offers to lead them to her mysterious community. But what awaits them there?
